The best shopping malls in Yangon are City Mall St. John for quiet grocery trips, Junction Square for a full day of food and entertainment, Myanmar Plaza for electronics and lake views, and Hledan Centre for street food and local atmosphere. Most visitors will find everything they need at one of these four. Bring cash, check the exchange rate before changing money, and read the safety section below before planning a trip.
Official advice should come before any shopping plans. The US State Department rates all of Myanmar Level 4: Do Not Travel, an advisory issued May 8, 2026. The UK takes a more regional view: it no longer advises against all but essential travel to Yangon Region, but still notes a heightened risk there. Insurance deserves a check too, because some policies exclude destinations under “Do Not Travel” advice. Advisories change often, so recheck your own government’s page before booking anything. Is Yangon Safe for Tourists? Official Safety Advice, Areas to Be Careful, Common Scams, and Practical Tips +2
Myanmar uses the kyat (MMK), and the official and street rates are far apart. The Central Bank’s reference rate is held at 2,100 kyat per dollar, while weighted average trading rates sit around 3,570 to 3,580. One bank’s counter rates were about 3,658 to buy and 3,668 to sell. This article converts at roughly 3,600 MMK to 1 USD, since using the official rate would make everything look about 70% more expensive than it really is. regalertyomabank
Cash matters. Many shops in the malls below do not accept cards or wallets such as AYA Pay, and ATMs can be scarce, so carry small notes.
These figures are budgeting estimates, not quotes, and should be confirmed on arrival.

City Mall St. John is the best choice for a calm grocery and family outing. The three-story mall stands on the site of the old St. John market, beside the New Yangon General Hospital, and reviewers consistently describe it as less crowded than its rivals, even on weekends. Ocean Supermarket takes up two floors, and the mall also has a gym, a cinema, a money changer, and a kids’ zone with a paid play area alongside a free one.
What sets it apart is a set of small conveniences. Shoppers can have their car washed while they browse, and it is one of the few places left in the city that still sells car CDs.
A few practical points are worth knowing. Power cuts can stall the elevators for a long stretch, so locate the stairs or escalators early. Counting change at the register also pays off: one shopper handed over 220,000 kyat for a 214,000 kyat bill (about $59) and only noticed the mix-up back in the car. Finally, some shops here take cash only.
Junction Square is the best all-rounder for food, movies, and games. It stands in Kamayut Township, across from Time City and close to Yangon University, and it opens daily from 9am to 9pm. The complex is split into two buildings, one holding the shops, restaurants, and a three-hall cinema, and the other serving as the car park, with more restaurants on its upper floor.
Entertainment is the main draw, with an arcade, bowling, and karaoke, plus pop-up markets and occasional night markets on the front plaza. Visitors who spend money inside can use their receipts to claim a refund on parking, which softens what is otherwise one of the pricier car parks in the city. The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf is a local favorite for studying and meetings, thanks to good WiFi, easy charging, and a range of seating.
The downsides are traffic and crowds. The entrance can back up at peak times, and the toilets, though available on every floor, see heavy use.
Myanmar Plaza is the best mall in Yangon for electronics and lake views. It is the retail section of the HAGL Myanmar Centre, a development that also includes offices and a hotel, and it faces Inya Lake. The two names refer to one complex, not two separate malls.
Dining here comes with scenery. A top-floor ramen shop is a favorite for its view of the lake, and the walk along Inya Lake across the road makes a natural follow-up to a meal. Several floors are given over to phone, telecom, and appliance showrooms, which makes this the strongest choice for tech shopping. Families will also find an ice-skating rink and a children’s play area, and evenings bring rooftop bars.
The biggest complaint is that there is no cinema. Sunday afternoons are also best avoided because of the crowds, and fashion shoppers may find the choice thinner and the prices higher than elsewhere. Some nightlife venues have reportedly closed over the years, so confirm what is open before heading there for the evening.
Hledan Centre is the place to go for local energy. It sits at one of Yangon’s busiest junctions, with a City Mart supermarket in the basement and a wet market and street food stalls just outside. Language schools on the third floor make it a hangout for young people, and a 24-hour café keeps it useful late into the night.
Its character comes from its surroundings more than from the building itself. Visitors who need a visa appointment will also find a VFS Global office on the fifth floor, which handles Schengen applications.
Two cautions come up in reviews. Parking has been reported at 1,000 kyat per hour (about $0.28) with no free first half hour, which is double what one reviewer says Junction Square charges. And where shops display no price tags, foreign visitors have reported quotes as much as 60% above fair value, so ask first, compare, and favor tagged items. Weekends get very crowded, so a weekday visit is easier.
For quiet shopping, choose City Mall St. John. For a long day of eating, movies, and games, choose Junction Square. For electronics and a lake view, go to Myanmar Plaza, and for street food and a taste of everyday Yangon, head to Hledan Centre.
Junction Square and Myanmar Plaza are most often described as the largest and most modern, with Junction Square spreading across multiple floors and two buildings.
City Mall St. John, Junction Square (three halls), and Hledan Centre (a small cinema) all have one. Myanmar Plaza does not.
Junction Square opens daily from 9am to 9pm. Hours at the others can change, so confirm locally.
Often not. Some shops reject cards and AYA Pay, so carrying cash is the safe approach.
No. Fees run from about 500 to 1,000 kyat per hour ($0.14–0.28), and Junction Square offers a receipt-based refund.
City Mall St. John, according to reviewers. Sunday afternoons are the busiest time at Junction Square and Myanmar Plaza.
Meals and coffee are cheap in dollar terms, while branded fashion and imported goods cost more. Hledan Centre and Myanmar Plaza are the two most often described as pricier than shops outside.
